Fight between Cops and Public

An angry mob set fire to at least 5 vehicles, torched a power station, smashed 21 other vehicles and assaulted a journalist after a Muslim woman was allegedly hit by a cop in Ramganj area in Jaipur during a vehicle check. Clashes between the police and the mob resulted in the death of a local. Many others have been injured on both sides.

Deccan Herald quotes Jaipur Police Commissioner Sanjay Agarwal saying that a minor dispute between a police constable and a couple on a bike led to the clashes.

Internet in the city has been suspended to prevent the spread of rumors. Curfew has been imposed in four police station areas of the city.

Schools have been shut down. The curfew has created some problems for the residents in the four localities – the other three being Manak Chowk, Galta Gate and Subhash Chowk.

The violence happened inside the walled city area, which has a very high Muslim population.

According to reports, the people of Jaipur were not even aware of the violent clashes. What appears commendable is that by the morning the police had brought everything under control, and the people outside the locality got to learn about the curfew only when they were about to send their children to school.
