The deceased were identified as Gagan Pal Singh, 39, his wife Bhavna, 38, daughter Suhavi, 12 and son Ruveer, 4. Another 12-year-old girl identified as Tanu Das, who worked as a domestic help in their house, also died in the mishap. Fire services authorities said they were informed about the mishap at 5.18 am. “Prima facie, it seems the fire occurred at 5 am. We received a call from police control room at 5.18 am and immediately mobilized four fire tender vehicles to douse the fire. Though we are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the fire, we suspect the spark originated due to short circuit in the AC,” deputy fire officer Ramesh Majhi told Odisha Bulletin.
Three rooms on the second floor of the three-storey palatial building located on Cuttack Road were gutted in the fire. “The couple and their two children were in sleep in one of the rooms while Das was sleeping in an adjacent room. Fire quickly spread due to the presence of wooden household articles and furniture. All of them were trapped in the rooms,” Majhi said.
Though the fire fighters evacuated the five persons from windows and rushed them to a nearby private hospital, they were declared dead upon arrival. Other members of the family staying on the ground and first floor are safe as the fire did not reach them. Gagan’s parents were in sleep in a room on the ground floor while his elder brother and his family were on the first floor.
