BJD president and chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday claimed Odisha stood first in country on giving rights over forest land to dwellers under Forest Rights Act (FRA).
“We have also taken a number of steps for welfare of tribals,” Naveen told a meeting among many he addressed in predominantly tribal Kandhamal district. The district goes to polls on April 10.
In the second-leg of electioneering, the BJD supremo addressed meets at Khajuripada, Tikabali and Sarangagada. Last week, he had addressed rallies at Daringibadi and Kotagarh.
Hitting out at Congress and BJP, the CM said they surface only during elections and promise several things. “They will not be with you. But, I will be with you,” Naveen told an election rally at Khajuripada.
Wooing women, he said his government made 50% reservation for the fair sex in panchayati raj system and urban local bodies.
Even though eight candidates are in the fray for the seat, the main fight would be between BJD’s Hemendra Singh and Congress’ Harihara Karan, said a poll pundit. Singh, a turncoat, is scion of Nayagarh royal family while Karan is a veteran Congress leader and former minister.
Naveen then flew to Sukinda in Jajpur district to campaign for party candidate Pritiranjan Ghadei, who is pitted against Congress strongman Sarat Rout. He asked voters to teach the Congress-led UPA government a lesson for refusing special status tag to Odisha.
