the state government to pay compensation of Rs 50,000 each to two persons

CUTTACK: The Orissa high court has asked the state government to pay compensation of Rs 50,000 each to two persons who were allegedly tortured by junior doctors on the hostel premises of SCB Medical College and Hospital in 2002.

Justice B K Patel on Friday directed the government to pay the amount to Manoj Mohanty and his nephew, Biswa Bijay Mohanty, within eight weeks. The victims alleged that junior doctors of SCB had beaten them up after they had an altercation with a doctor following the death of Manoj’s father in the hospital. Manoj alleged that a junior doctor on duty had failed to attend to his father in time, which led to his death. According to the duo, after Manoj had a heated exchange with the doctor, a group of junior doctors took them to a hostel and assaulted them throughout the night. The victims alleged they were beaten up with hockey sticks and cycle chains and stabbed with syringes. They were rescued by police on the next morning.
